Winter Hill is the former stomping grounds of Irish crime boss, Whitey Bulger. These days, it's experienced a culinary reawakening and a surge in popularity. The innovative food and drink
includes places like Winter Hill Brewing, Neighborhood Produce, Somerville Bread Company, and Tipping Cow, among others.
While it's long been a traditional community, newcomers are bringing a new spirit of creativity while respecting the history of the area. While Winter Hill is experiencing a rise in prices and influx of coffee shops, the neighborhood real estate prices have remained relatively low compared to neighboring enclaves, but this probably won't stay the same for long. For transportation, there's Sullivan Station which is a stop for many major bus routes. It's also only a 15-minute walk to Davis Square where you can catch the Red Line to anywhere in Boston.
What makes us who we are, are these old-school Italian spots, places that have endured time and the rough times. I’m hoping all that stuff stays. The worry about a neighborhood really developing is that it loses its identity, and I don’t want to do that. I want to tread lightly. That being said, the nature of really evolving is to explore new ways to identify oneself. (Nick Robinson, the Founder of Somerville Bread Company)
